Historically, Akureyri was informed by its relationship to the surrounding environment, however over time these connections between the town, its people and its setting have been eroded. To reconnect the town with its spectacular location a series of landscape initiatives are proposed including the creation of three linear parks and the formation of a new water channel connecting the main shopping street to the harbour and the installation of programmable lighting systems to compensate for the lack of winter daylight. Work involved collating a local planning document, looking at the massing, materiality and public realm strategy for the regeneration of the town centre that would provide a template for local architects to follow. For each building plot, ‘binding’ and ‘illustrative guidelines were described through suitable drawings and information.
