Capitalising upon Vardø’s extreme seasonality and unparalleled natural landscape setting we propose a series of strategy based interventions at island-wide, urban and building scales that reveal and strengthen Vardø’s pre-existing identities, networks and infrastructures and create new opportunities for Vardø’s future success. Our urban proposals aim to enhance connections between people, key buildings, public spaces and the water. The establishment of a vibrant and sustainable waterfront will re-orientate the town centre to new uses and promote a transformative understanding of Vardø’s urban identity amongst residents and visitors alike. Following the decline of fishing as the dominant local industry, many commercial and industrial buildings in the harbour area lie empty. We perceive existing vacant buildings as an asset, not a liability, providing opportunities for colonisation by new alternative community and business uses that will be central to the diversification and regeneration of the town.
